Library Director

Overview

The Library Director provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for all library operations, services, and staff. This role is responsible for advancing the library’s mission, managing resources effectively, fostering community or institutional partnerships, and ensuring high-quality, inclusive library services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Strategy
    • Serve as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the library
    • Report to and advise the board of trustees. The Library Director will prepare a monthly report to be presented at each board meeting.
  • Administration & Operations
    • Oversee daily operations of the library facility
    • Establish and enforce policies, procedures, and service standards in accordance with Board policies and applicable laws and professional standards
    • Evaluate and improve library services based on user needs and data
  • Staff Management
    • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate library staff
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture that supports professional development and performance excellence.
  • Budget & Financial Management
    • Prepare and manage the library’s budget
    • Seek funding through grants, fundraising, or partnerships
    • Monitor expenditures, maintain financial records, and manage contracts, vendors, and resource acquisitions to ensure fiscal accountability.
  • Collections & Services
    • Oversee collection development and resource management, including cataloging, purchasing within budget, and maintaining, weeding, and replacing materials as needed.
    • Support programming, research services, and other initiatives
    • Promote equitable access to information and technology, including oversight of interlibrary loan services.
  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Promote library programs and services through outreach, marketing, and responding to community needs and feedback.
    • Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and intellectual freedom, ensuring patrons’ questions are addressed or referred appropriately.
  • Facilities & Technology
    • Oversee library facilities, safety, and space planning
    • Guide the adoption and use of library technologies and systems
    • Plan for future infrastructure and service innovations

Education Requirements

  • 2 academic years of college education including 9 credits in library science from an accredited institution; OR
  • 2 academic years of college education with no credits in library science AND 9 college credits in library science from an accredited institution; OR
  • 2 academic years of college education with no credits in library science AND be willing and able to work towards earning 9 college credits in library science from an accredited institution

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain all required child safety clearances, including Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, and FBI fingerprint clearance.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Strong communication, budgeting, and organizational abilities
  • Knowledge of current trends in librarianship and information technology
  • Experience with strategic planning and change management
  • Grant writing or fundraising experience preferred 
  • Experience with QuickBooks preferred

Work Schedule & Compensation

  • This position is scheduled for 20–35 hours per week, with a starting hourly rate of $15.00, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Some evening or weekend work may be required.
  • Travel for meetings, conferences, or outreach may be necessary.
